First Practice Hike

Miles Hiked

3.5 miles
So today I finally actually got outside for a hike.  It’s been really hot here lately so I’ve stayed in the gym until now.  I went 3.5 miles total at the Kettle Moraine State Forest, Lapham Peak Unit.  I found a small (3/8 mile) loop of the hardest stretch of the black cross country ski trail.  Part of this stretch is named “The Wall” if that is any indication.

I did 4 laps on that loop, plus about 2 miles that were easier to get to/from that area for a total of 3.5 miles.  Considering the Half Dome round trip is around 15 miles, I have a ways to go.  That said, I could have gone much longer physically if I had the time, but we had other plans for the day.

I rolled my ankle about 10 minutes into the hike (a common occurrence with these ankles unfortunately).  That aside, I think it went pretty well and that I might actually do OK at Half Dome in September.

Hi, my name is Scott.

I used to be an avid hiker, but then I got a job at a desk, writing software.  Read more about me.

Over the last several years I haven’t done anything active, let alone hiking.  It shows.

Well, I’ve been invited on a hike in September.  We’ll be climbing Half Dome in Yosemite.

I’ve got a lot of work to do in order to be able to make it.  So I figured I’d start up a blog on this domain I’ve been sitting on for a couple years.  I plan to write about “my journey and my journey to the journey.”  By that, I mean not only will I write about the trip itself, and other hikes I intend to take, but my path to re-conditioning myself.

I’m not sure how often I’ll update this site, but I am committed to getting up more and getting out more.

Stay tuned.
