Weigh In, Some Helpful Software

Today's Weight

233 lbs
I’m feeling pretty good today.  I’m down to 233 pounds now, a loss of 12 pounds.  That’s not too bad, but the real reason I’m feeling good is that 7 of those pounds have come off in the last 12 days since I started being more careful and calculated about my eating habits.

I’ve been using a site called MyFitnessPal (MFP) to track my calories and exercise.  I started out with Lose It!, which I think I like better in many ways, but MFP has a lot more food and exercises in its database, which makes it much easier.  I don’t have to look up as many things on the web and manually enter them.

It’s true what they say: you can’t out exercise a bad diet.  This is proof of that to me.  In 12 days of being very careful about my food, I’ve lost more weight than I did in the previous 6 weeks of only exercise.

And to be honest, I’m not really suffering.  I have to spend a few minutes before each meal to figure out what it’s going to be, but I’m mostly still feeling satisfied and am even finding some treats that make it much better.  For example, I bought a big bar of dark chocolate.  It’s about 85 calories for three squares from the bar.  I keep it in my desk drawer at work, and if I need something I break off three squares and add 85 calories to my total.  It’s enough to satisfy the urge for chocolate or candy.  Since dark chocolate is healthier than milk chocolate, it’s a fair trade in my opinion.

I’d be interested to find out what other treats I should consider.  What else is tasty and less than 100 calories?

First Practice Hike

Miles Hiked

3.5 miles
So today I finally actually got outside for a hike.  It’s been really hot here lately so I’ve stayed in the gym until now.  I went 3.5 miles total at the Kettle Moraine State Forest, Lapham Peak Unit.  I found a small (3/8 mile) loop of the hardest stretch of the black cross country ski trail.  Part of this stretch is named “The Wall” if that is any indication.

I did 4 laps on that loop, plus about 2 miles that were easier to get to/from that area for a total of 3.5 miles.  Considering the Half Dome round trip is around 15 miles, I have a ways to go.  That said, I could have gone much longer physically if I had the time, but we had other plans for the day.

I rolled my ankle about 10 minutes into the hike (a common occurrence with these ankles unfortunately).  That aside, I think it went pretty well and that I might actually do OK at Half Dome in September.

Modified Plan

Today's Weight

240 lbs
So for the last 6 weeks or so my plan has been to walk on the treadmill 4-5 days per week and “try to be smarter” about what I eat.

Turns out I’m not smart enough about food on my own.  Sure, I’ve lost 5 pounds in the last six weeks, and normally, if I were just on a weight loss journey, I’d be very happy with that pace.  However, I have a trip coming up in September, and maintaining that pace isn’t going to let me succeed on that hike.

So I’m going to be more careful and precise about what I eat.  I’m looking at a couple sites that provide calorie tracking functionality.  Knowing that it takes a 3500 calorie deficit to lose a pound, I’m targeting a 1000 calorie daily deficit, enough to lose 2 pounds per week.  This means that on days I don’t exercise, I will eat around 1500 calories.  On days I do exercise, I’ll eat more.

My new plan is to be this strict until my hike, and then reevaluate.

Mini Marathon

Calories Burned

926 cal
OK, so it’s not even really close to a real marathon, but today I hit the treadmill for about 1 hour and 45 minutes.  In that time I burned 926 calories.

I have to be honest.  While I’ve seen some improvement compared to when I started a month ago, I’m not seeing the results I’d hoped for yet.

First Days at the Gym

Calories Burned

232 cal
So today was my second day at the gym.

I’ve decided that until my trip comes and goes, I’m going to spend most of my time on the treadmill.  I may do a little weight training, but will probably wait until after I get back to start that.

My goal is to be able to do a half hour workout at the max incline, 15%, at 3 – 3.5 miles per hour.  I’m not there yet.  Today I only burned 232 calories.  It’s not really that much, but it’s more than I burned last Tuesday.

Training and Exercise

Today's Weight

245 lbs
So, my current weight is 245 lbs.  I’m 6′ 2″, so I currently weight around 50-55 pounds more than I’d like to weigh.

My plan is to start taking advantage of that gym membership I’ve been paying for over the last couple months.  Ideally, I’ll lose 20-25 pounds before my Yosemite trip in September.

Hi, my name is Scott.

I used to be an avid hiker, but then I got a job at a desk, writing software.  Read more about me.

Over the last several years I haven’t done anything active, let alone hiking.  It shows.

Well, I’ve been invited on a hike in September.  We’ll be climbing Half Dome in Yosemite.

I’ve got a lot of work to do in order to be able to make it.  So I figured I’d start up a blog on this domain I’ve been sitting on for a couple years.  I plan to write about “my journey and my journey to the journey.”  By that, I mean not only will I write about the trip itself, and other hikes I intend to take, but my path to re-conditioning myself.

I’m not sure how often I’ll update this site, but I am committed to getting up more and getting out more.

Stay tuned.
